A (Not At All) Brief History of
Boy Scouts ½ on the Web
Boy Scouts ½ on the Web
Boy Scouts ½ has had three incarnations on the internet over the years. Well, four if you count it's predecessor.
The website first began life over at Geocities in 1998. Back then, it was not a Boy Scouts ½ specific website, but rather it was a "John Smith Publishing, Inkorporated" website that also featured some of my earlier, much more horrible writing, most notably The John Smith Series and The Spockman Adventures series. (More on those series can be found in the notes to Kenny's Laboratory: Winning the Doorprise.) What I had written for those earlier series had all been done prior to the creation of the website, and at the time Boy Scouts ½ was my main priority to write. So it should come as no surprise that it quickly began to dominate the website. Thus, I eventually made a decision to abandon the earlier work and the website was rebranded as The Boy Scouts ½ Universe!
And all was right in the world.
Then, one day, poof! The website was gone! No explanation, no way to retrieve it... Nothing.
Fortunately, at the time the website was not quite the behemoth it eventually became, and I secured a new home for it at Tripod. It continued to grow and prosper... Then, I shall admit, it stagnated for a while, as I kept letting more and more time... occasionally on the order of a few years... pass between updates.
Still, what was there was there. And it remained there, not hurting anybody and minding its own business.
Then, one day, poof! The website was gone! No explanation, no way to retrieve it... Nothing but an incredible sense of déjà vu.
This was particularly troubling, as I no longer had a full back up of the entire website ready to just instantly pop back up somewhere else. As for the main thing... the content itself... the stories... Well, I had most of them...
And so, after the last version of the site had burned down, fallen over, and then sunken into the swamp, I found a new home here at Weebly. The third home of the Boy Scouts ½ website, and the fourth version of it if you count the prototypical John Smith Publishing, Inkorporated website as a separate version.
Thus far, knock on the proverbial wood... The fourth one has stayed up! And that's what you're getting, readers, the strongest website in these isles!
It is good to remember one's history. And, in looking through some of the older versions of the website (by use of The Internet Archive Wayback Machine), I have come across some interesting tidbits. Before getting further into the history of the website itself, here is one of those tidbits! A look at messages left in the Boy Scouts ½ (and before that, the John Smith Publishing, Inkorporated) Website's Guestbook, in 2000, 1999, and 1998. Some interesting bits of nostalgia here, including messages left by some of the other people who, over the years, have written for and/or appeared in Boy Scouts ½!
Now that we're past that, we shall take a detailed look at the history of the website itself. Back in the 90's, here is how I described this history of the (then rather new) Boy Scouts ½ series and website:

A History of Boy Scouts ½: The Series
It could not have been much before early 1997 that I first discovered Rumiko Takahashi's Ranma ½. Up until this discovery, my only exposure to anime had been vague memories of Robotech from childhood, Sailor Moon, an adult anime I had borrowed from a friend (one day, I must return it to him...), and three videos I had purchased on 1997's New Years Day. (One of those videos had been Urusei Yatsura, another Takahashi creation.)
I immediately took a liking to Ranma ½. The series had strong characters, multi-episode story arcs that developed the relationships between the characters, and a strong sense of humor. Although the series eventually degenerates to mainly being one-shot stories about Ranma fighting with another character, it still occasionally has episodes that deal less with the silly and more with the complex characters and the world they inhabit. It is these stories that still keep me reading / watching the series. (And, as much as I hate to admit it, usually the silly fighting episodes can be quite entertaining, too.)
In the spring of 1997, at a Boy Scout camporee, I had with me volumes 1 and 2 of the Ranma ½ Graphic Novel series published (in North America) by Viz Communications. I let a couple of my friends in the troop, Aaron Abdowmassy and Mike "Squid" Quadrozzi, read them. Needless to say, Mike and Aaron enjoyed them.
Over the course of the weekend, and even after the camporee, word quietly spread throughout the Troop and even to other Troops amongst those who could be trusted. (Ranma ½ contains many of what the Boy Scouts would call "Grey Areas," i.e., even the slightest nudity is strictly forbidden. Fans of Ranma know that, while it is not an adult series, it does have nudity in it, as do many manga (Japanese comics) and anime (Japanese animation).) Word spread most strongly through our council's Order of the Arrow lodge. (The O.A. is the Honor Society of the Boy Scouts of America.) In fact, except that we were unable to get permission from Viz, it was very likely for a time that our O.A. lodge would produce a patch featuring Ranma characters!
Going back to the camporee where this all started, Aaron, Mike, and a few others in the Troop began to wonder what it would be like if we had fallen in the cursed springs of Jusenkyo. As early as that camporee, we joked about doing a Boy Scouts ½ series, although at first it had been discussed as a comic, as Mike and Aaron are talented artists.
Perhaps a month or so afterwards, this idea still brimming in my head, I sat down at my computer and threw together a four page story that had Mike, Aaron, myself, and two other members of the troop meeting our fates at Jusenkyo. I brought it to the next troop meeting and everyone I showed it to loved it. I continued working on them, starting part two at the June O.A. weekend, and continuing work on parts two, three and four through the summer, at the National Scout Jamboree, and shortly afterwards.
After completing the first four, I noticed a small problem. I had originally intended Boy Scouts ½ to be an ensemble series with each of the main characters having equal importance. However, the way I was writing the series, it was quickly turning into, "Boy Scouts ½: Starring Matthew Atanian. Featuring a duck, a cat, a dog, and a squirrel."
Therefore, I offered Mike Quadrozzi the writing of part five, mandating him to feature my character only very briefly. I think part five easily outshines the first four parts, with Mike having brought a fresh perspective to the series and injecting it with his own unique brand of wit.
Aaron Abdowmassy then wrote part six. Actually, he rewrote an earlier version of part six I had written myself. Like Mike, he added his own unique perspective to the series, giving a life to the Kirstin / Aaron scenes that I had been unable to.
Aaron was to have written parts seven through nine as well, and in fact he wrote the first half of part seven. However, he then suddenly announced that he was having trouble with the series and with this trouble (as well as a lack of time due to other commitments) he was no longer interested in being a part of the creative team behind Boy Scouts ½. I was saddened to hear this, but it may have been for the best. Without meaning to offend Aaron, I must say that the first half of part seven shows that he was indeed having trouble with the series. The Magic game in part seven, which many have complained about being tedious and unnecessary to the plot, was originally twice as long!
I completed part seven myself, by editing the first half (mainly shortening the aforementioned Magic game) and writing the second half. Mike Quadrozzi is soon to begin work on parts eight and nine, and early plans are afoot for further adventures of our intrepid Jusenkyo cursed Scouts. It seems, indeed, that a bright future is in store for the Boy Scouts ½ series.
--Matt Atanian, 14 November 1998
Well, tragedy struck the Boy Scouts ½ writing team when, in mid October of 1998, Aaron Abdowmassy was shot through the head by a duck hunter named Billy Bob Joe Jessie James Bubba Smith III while the scout was walking home from having his weekly enema. Aaron was rushed to St. Barnabas Hospital and Blood Bank in Colinsport, Maine for intensive brain surgery. Sadly, because it isn't a very quick trip from Massachusetts to Maine, he died on route. Why he wasn't taken to a closer hospital is anyone's guess.
The above paragraph is, of course, poppycock. But it does seem, as of late, that Aaron, the real life Aaron, has "died." As stated above, he announced suddenly that he wanted to leave the Boy Scouts ½ writing team when he was midway through part 7. It now seems that around the same time he decided that he wanted to leave Boy Scouting itself, seemingly for good.
While Aaron is apparently out of Scouting for good, and out of the Boy Scouts ½ writing team as well, he claims to be dabbling on a Boy Scouts ½ side story at the moment which I believe he described as "Boy Scouts ½ meets Tom Clancy." When and if it is ever completed, if it is any good you may see it here, so we may not have heard the last of the (semi-)late Mr. Abdowmassy yet...

Aaron is alive! That side story I mentioned above? Well, plans are in the works between Aaron and myself for him to rewrite his idea to fit into the main body of the Boy Scouts ½ series! The man is back!
As for his idea in it's original format, the first half of the story is available on his site. Here's a link to it. Terror at the Klondike Durby. It is in plain text format. If you have any comments spicific about this story, please e-mail Aaron about them. You can now find his e-mail address on the Boy Scouts ½ main page.

A History of Boy Scouts ½ on the Web
Ever since getting regular web access, I wanted to carve out a chunk of cyberspace and create a website of my own I could call home. Of course, I did not want to fill it with frivolous nonsense, so I spent some time thinking about what kind of site I should build. Also, I did not even know at the time what HTML is, never mind how to program in it.
For the second problem, Aaron Abdowmassy, member of my Boy Scout troop, a Geocities Community Leader, and part time duck extrordinaire, offered to assist me, and once I came up with an idea, came over my place for a couple of hours and showed me everything I would need to know to get started.
For the first problem, the thought came to me to put online the stories I had written over the years, most of which can be found on other parts of this
website. The John Smith Series, The Spockman Adventures Series, Al's Amazing After A-bomb Adventures, and, of course, Boy Scouts ½.
The John Smith Publishing, Inkorporaited Official Website, with links leading to each of the above mentioned series, was created on 8 January 1998.
At the time I set up my site, I gave each series equal priority, and in fact the Boy Scouts ½ main page was just as simple as the others. No fancy counter (except on the main index page). No links to other sites that featured mine. Not even a link to my links page (again, except for on the main index page). And certainly not anything proclaiming membership in a webring.
As time went on, my priorities shifted to being almost exclusively the Boy Scouts ½ section of my website which, while unfortunate for the other series, was probably inevitable as Boy Scouts ½ is the only series I am currently writing. (I hope to get back to the others someday, but must admit it is probably unlikely...) As it is, I often neglect changing the "Last Updated On" date of the main index page when I make some Boy Scout ½ update, only changing the "Last Updated On" date on the Boy Scouts ½ main page.
And so Boy Scouts ½ grew. The first major event was being listed in the fanfic archive of Frank Sanchez's Ranma ½ Library.
The second major change was the addition of counters to the site. I added the main page's counter late one evening on 12 October 1998, over ten months after creating the site. It came as quite a shocked when a day later, I discovered that the counter showed over one hundred hits.
I immediately tested a theory and saw I was correct. I had managed to get Boy Scouts ½ listed on the famous Anime Web Turnpike after my second attempt at doing so. Since then, I regularly received at least one hundred visitors a day to the Boy Scouts ½ main page, although that number has of course dropped considerably since being removed from the Anipike's "New Turnpike Links" page.
It was not long before I wondered how many people were actually reading the stories, and on 15 October I added counters to the individual stories, to this page, and to the newly created Character Guide and Timeline. While, as I expected, not every one of these hundred's of people were reading the stories, I was pleased to see that plenty of people were. In the first month, over two hundred people sampled part one, and about sixty people had read them all. I even began to receive a few e-mails from people, mainly asking when part eight would be done. Two of the e-mails were people who were or had been Scouts themselves, and they were kind to praise the series for bringing back fond memories of their own Scouting experiences. (Granted, their Scouting experiences did not include falling into cursed springs...)
One of those people who e-mailed me also asked permission to list Boy Scouts ½ in the fanfic archive on his own site, and thus mention of Boy Scouts ½ can be found in BoneparteOzaki's Little Old-Fashioned Interdimensional House of Horrors.
Like the future of the series itself, the future of the Boy Scouts ½ website seems full of potential and hope.

The above is all fresh off the classic original website, complete with original grammar and spelling! The only things I've changed were the Abdowmassification of Aaron as per his wishes, and I made sure that all of the links still worked, mostly by linking them to Wayback Machine versions of the sites in question, although the Anime Web Turnpike is still around. (Sadly, the Wayback Machine did not have an archived version of Aaron's site, so that link talking about a prototypical version of his ideas for what would eventually turn into Boy Scouts ½ parts 19-21 is a fake link -- just some blue text -- and what would have been on the other side of it is lost forever.)
Some interesting things there, I think. Like the aforementioned, sadly non-functional link to a bit of Aaron writing. I did not now remember that Aaron had written anything of the sort for his "terrorist takeover of a camporee" idea, in his version the Klondike Derby, that would be the genesis of my eventual stories dealing with such a thing happening at the Spring Camporee. Pretty sure all I used when I wrote the stories, a year after this mentioning from when Aaron was possibly still going to be doing it, was the very basic premise of terrorists taking over a camporee. Still, a pity that I cannot read Aaron's words now, as I would be curious to see if indeed there might have been any other commonalities memory of which had been lost to the passage of time.
Also kind of cool to see the brief mention of "BoneparteOzaki's" website, that being a former pseudonym of one Jason Bertovich, and this note about it dated November 1998 probably is one of the first things related to a friendship that I still have and value to this day.
Anyway, that was the introductory notes. These were found on a page on the old websites titled, "Introduction and Notes," which on today's version of the website one would probably find the Site Blog to be the closest analog to. For, after the above notes, was a list, from most recent to as far back as close to the beginning of the site, of each update that was made to the website.
No one asked for it, so here it is! Those update notes, preserved for posterity. (The last of these are, alas, lost, as the final one archived is mention of Boy Scouts ½, part 22. But everything up to and including that point is preserved below.)

From the Tripod Website:
25 September 2003: Part 22 is here! We're back! Woo hoo! Now, if you will please excuse me, I am very tired and must go to bed. Good night -- or rather, early morning -- everyone! Hope to see you soon with Part 23!
16 September 2003: Nothing major, alas. Just some minor adjustments to the main series's index page. A new story, you ask? Soon, I say. Soon. (Please, FOR THE LOVE OF ALL THAT IS SACRED, make it soon!)
14 July 2003: Dear Goddess, has it really been almost a year since the last significant update? Alas, it has.
And the main subject of this update isn't good news, I fear. Much like Geocities had once decided to delete my entire website without so much as a by-your-leave, they now seem to have done the same thing to the Message Board. Ye Old Boy Scouts ½ Message Centre no longer exists. Matt Abert informed me of its absence, and checking for myself I discovered it was gone.
Couldn't have been because no one ever used it anymore... Mind you, traffic was very slow, but it wasn't completely dead. In fact, my dearest Jessi-chan had just posted a message there last Thursday! So, I guess this just goes to show that Geocities is evil.
Pity about this. Although there was a lot of garbage on the message board, there was some rather interesting stuff, too. Alas, unlike my website, I didn't
take the time to back up all of the messages. (Quite frankly, it would have been too much of a hassle.) So unless some rabidly insane BS½ fan out there has a copy of all of the messages, they are all lost forever.
Also, I must say that right now finding a new message board is not high on my list. Not to say that there will never be one... but for now you will have to do without. If you really need to get in touch with me, my e-mail address is probably at a hundred different places on this website. And if you just want a
really cool web-forum to hang out on, I'd suggest the one at AnimeOnDVD.com. (You'll find me there as Yotsuyasan.)
Now, so as to not make this message completely bad news... a bit of good. The message Jessi posted last Thursday was to the effect that a major hurdle in the writing of BS½ part 22 (namely that the file for it, containing probably half the story, had gone missing) has been solved. Now, I can't promise anything (as if that promise was broken, I would then have to face a lynch mob) but I am rather hopeful that by this time next month you could be reading brand spanking new Boy Scouts ½ in who knows how long!
Well... looking back, since 25 June 2001, I guess! Damn, two years! I'm dreadfully sorry, everyone. (Assuming, that is, many of you have actually held
on that long!) Well, I am quite optimistic about the future, so here we go!
22 August 2002: Oh my goodness! A new story! Enjoy Perspectives X, or Ghaleon will strangle you in your sleep. (Kidding on that last bit, mind you.)
16 May 2002: New page for you to enjoy: The Boy Scouts ½ Art Archive! On this page you will find:
--The original Quadrozzi art
--Art by the official BS½ Staff Artist, the beautiful Jessi Pysz
--Never before seen preliminary sketches by Christopher Horton, former BS½ staff artist
--Miscellaneous website graphics, many produced by Matthew Atanian
--Even a piece of fan art some guy once put in my guestbook back when the bloody thing still worked. (I must get a new one some day... And some new counters...)
Enjoy!
13 May 2002: Did some minor restructuring of the main index page, and updated the Boy Scouts ½ Series index page to reflect Mike's unfortunate departure and the impending return of Hughes.
2 April 2002: Temporarily added a new story... Not BS½ related, but you may find it interesting. It is a novella written by Jason Bertovich that he would very much like feedback on. If you have the time, please check it out. Remember, since it isn't BS½ related, this is a limited time offer, so act today! Mwa ha ha ha ha!
30 March 2002: New Story!Alas, Mike has yet to come through, and it seems that he may not be... but Jason Bertovich is back! A new Perspectives for you to read as I try to rescue the main series somehow...
Also, yet another new pic on the main page from the lovely Jessi-chan! Enjoy!
19 March 2002: Well, yet another new main page pic from Jessi Pysz! It's a bit belated due to personal reasons, but it is entirely my fault! Sorry! Enjoy the belated St. Patrick's Day Pic!
Speaking of belated... As much as I hate to pass the blame... well, hell... I'll pass it. Hello, Mike!!! Are you out there!?!? Where the hell are the next two parts to Boy Scouts ½?!?!?
8 February 2002: Cheesecake is gone, replaced by a rather nice pic of Nicole decked out in Valentine's Day attire. Enjoy!
3 January 2002: Well, no new stories yet. (Send all complaints and lynch mobs Mike's way.) But! New peice of art! The Halloween pic on the main page is (finely) gone, replaced with a nice (ahem) cheesecake pic of Matty Hayes. I'd say, "Enjoy," but to paraphrase Aaron and Mike, "That's sick, (you), just sick!"
28 October 2001: The contest ended a day or two ago. Congradulations to Jesse Lashway, the winner.
Also, although she has been hard at work for some time with little sketches to get used to the characters, the Boy Scouts ½ website is blessed with its first official peice of art from our new (volunteer) staff artist, Jessi Pysz. It is Halloween themed, and for the time being you can find it on the main page.
13 September 2001: First off, on behalf of myself and everyone else who is creatively involved with Boy Scouts ½, I'd like to express our sympathicies for anyone who has suffered a loss durring the recent tragedy, and all our hopes for anyone who is still waiting for any word from a loved one.
And, in Boy Scouts ½ news, there is a new contest starting today. Click on the link on the main page for details.
3 August 2001: Well, here's an update that is much more on-topic! New story! The second Troop 180 Chronicles story is now online! (You can find it in the "Boy Scouts ½ Series section, of course. Doesn't become a full fledged spin-off untill it gets a third story, and then only if at least a fourth is planned.)
Some may wonder why I have the counter on the new story when I haven't fixed the counters yet. Well, the "Counter as of" date is a handy refrence to me as to the date a story became available... so having the counter there even when it is broken is more for my refrence then for anything else.
Also, anyone who frequents the message board may have noticed that it mysteriously vanished for a week or so not long ago. At first I feared that evil Geocities had struck again, but it seemes the board is back now and fully intact, so all is well.
Well... a week from now I shall be in Baltamore going crazy, Otaku style. Anyone else who is going, look for the freak who is wearing a black trench coat and fedora in the hot, August heat of Baltamore. That's (most likely) me.
Oh, one last bit... I archived all updates prior to the move from Geocities.
11 July 2001: It's nothing to do with Boy Scouts ½, but it is an issue that I feal the anime fan community (which I feal a good portion of Boy Scouts ½ readers are probably a part of) needs to be aware of. It's my bloody website, I can be as off topic as I want. Please read, "The Slayers Problem, or Why CPM is Evil", a Public Service Announcement from Boy Scouts ½.
25 June 2001: I think things are pretty much ready. Well, ready enough in any case. The site is as far as I know pretty functional. Counters still don't work, of course, and the guestbook is temporarily caput. Also, the info on the "Want to link to Boy Scouts ½?" page is completely invalid, and will have to be changed. Lastly, the information on this here page will need a re-write. However, all of that is just icing on the cake. The cake itself is quite ready for consumption.
At least, I'm pretty sure it is. If anyone notices any links that don't work, or anything else they think might be an error related to the move, please e-mail me and let me know.
In any case, Boy Scouts ½ is now officially re-opened for business.
Now, as for what I've done today... I did a bit of work here and there, streamlining the main page a bit and doing some minor fixes to a few other pages.
Speaking of the main page, there are temporarily two of them. That's right, two!
Why, you ask? Well, it all goes back to when this site first started, back on Geocities. Of course, back then it featured other series I wrote, as well as BS½ (which, at this early time, did not yet have spin-off's of it's own).
Back then, the BS½ index page was not the main page of the site. When I dropped the non-BS½ content, rather then make the BS½ index page my main index file and change all of the links on every page necessary, I kept the BS½ index page (which was now my main page) as a file named "bs1-2.html," and made my "index.html" file into a glorified doorway. (A "click here to go to Boy Scouts ½" thingy.)
With the move to Tripod, I decided it was time to make the main page my "index.html" file. That would mean that people would only have to type in "http://BoyScouts1-2.tripod.com" to get to Boy Scouts ½, rather then having to type out "http://BoyScouts1-2.tripod.com/bs1-2.html". (If one really wanted to, one could type out "http://BoyScouts1-2.tripod.com/index.html", but it isn't necessary.)
Now, this means I will have to go and change every link on my website that previously went to "bs1-2.html" so that it now goes to "index.html". This will
take a while, so until this is completed, I am keeping duplicate main pages at both "index.html" and "bs1-2.html". I suppose, as far as this is concerned, it is good that the counters are temporarily out of commission! It'd be a pain in the arse with two main pages!
If all goes well, none of you should even notice anything concerning this whole afair unless you are looking for it. I'll let you know when it's all done.
(Oh, my... It occures to me that I signed up the new URL for a listing on the Anipike before I decided to do this whole thing with the index page! Hello! If someone from the Anipike reads this before you link me, drop the "/bs1-2.html" from my URL! And, as is more likely, if a representitive from the Anipike does not see this, when all is finished with I suppose I shall have to turn "bs1-2.html" into a new glorified doorway. ^_^)
Oh! One other thing I did today... New story! Boy Scouts ½ part 21 is here for you to enjoy!
16 June 2001: Well, yesterday I did a little bit of stuff... Nothing on this site, so to speak, but stuff pertaining to the site.
First off, I updated the link on my AOL member page, which is basically just a glorified advertisment for this site.
More importantly, I submited the new location to the Anime Web Turnpike (http://classic.anipike.com/) and reported the old BS½ site as a dead link.
Just in case the site gets listed before my official re-opening, I'l like to say a big hello to anyone visiting via the AniPike, and assure you that the site is 99% functional.Well, I'm off to take care of more little details, and get some writing done. Ja ne!
14 June 2001: First off, happy Flag Day! (Tis one of my favourate hollidays, for reasons I shall keep to myself at the moment...)
Secondly... We're back! The Boy Scouts ½ website has returned!
Well... we're not technically open to the public just yet... But this is the internet! Anyone with the URL can come and visit weather I want them to, or not. So, I give a warm and hearty welcome to all interlopers! (Well, and a big hello to any message board visiters I asked to come over and see if everythings working as it should.)
Well, this whole mess started a few months ago when the big, bad entity known as Geocities decided to say, "%*&$ you, Matt!" and my entire website mysteriously vanished.
I was rather annoyed... Fortunately I had the entire site backed up on my hard drive. I set about trying to get an explination from Geocities, but to no avail. And thus, I have now come to my new home at Tripod. I signed up for an account, uploaded all of the files, and here we are!
Of course, I still have a bit of work to do... I have to get anyplace that has a link to my site updated. (I'll probably just remove the "Webrings" section of my site.) I have to do something about the counters. (That'll be a mess.) And I'm sure there will be some other problems.
Oh, and I have to finish part 21 sometime during all of this!
Well, that's all for now! See you soon!
Enjoy!

From the Original Geocities Website
5 April 2001: The first instalment of the Boy Scouts ½ Outlast-The-Other-Guy Challenge is here! I do appologise for the delay... After Jason sent it to me, and I edited it, and he aproved the final version, I then procrastinated a bit and a bit more... Then three days ago, I finely got off my duff and put the HTML code in... only to discover that my computer was going to play the Freeze Game every time I tried to access my website's file manager! (Baka computer!) Well, I tried at least five times that night, and another five times the next night (last night). Now, at last, tonight (or rather, early this morning) my computer decided to cooperate! Hoora!
Hmm... This updates list is getting rather long... I should archive most of the earlier updates soon, but not tonight. I don't want to press my luck. (Bloody thing will probably freeze any second, don't you know...)
16 February 2001: I didn't add a new story today... but I did
add the first ever Boy Scouts ½ song! It can be found with the Boy Scouts ½ Side
Stories.
11 February 2001: Part 20! Enjoy.
7 February 2001: I made a few small additions to the Moses Guide, I moved the polls to their own page, and I also added a whole new section to the site! The Boy Scouts ½ Outlast-The-Other-Guy Challenge!
5 February 2001: I added A Boy Scouts ½ Guide to the Horace A. Moses Scout Reservation to the website. I think the title is self explanitory, and I hope you all enjoy it.
Also, the last update only mentions one poll, and you may have noticed there are four. Two of the others were added the same day, the last one was added the following day. I just didn't update the updates page.
And lastly, I really am working on 20! In fact, it was working on 20 (which is set at Moses) that inspired me to write the new guide. It was an itch I then had to scratch, and now that it is complete I shall return to my regularly scheduled story writing.
24 January 2001: Added the first ever BS½ Poll to the main page! (And I promise I am working on part 20! I really am! Honest!)
Wee Hours of 3 December 2000: New Main Series Story! Enjoy Boy Scouts ½, part 19: Northern Exposure!
Also, I fixed a bit of HTML in part 18. Nothing major.
I think Geocities may have changed their Guestbook system. (Much like they recently changed their whole counter system, thank you very much, Geocities!) If my suspicions are correct, then the Sign Guestbook feature may be temporarily unavailabe. I'll try to fix it soon, and I'm sorry for any inconvienience.
19 Novemver 2000: Time for international celebration! There is a new Kenny's Laboratory for you all to enjoy.
4 November 2000: There's been an update to the Character Guide. Now, it's probably not the update you've all been hoping for (in other words, no new enteries... yet...) but I think you'll find it all interesting, none the less.
A friend sent me a picture of herself last night, and while I was looking at it, something was nagging at my mind. There was something about this photo... Then it hit me! She'd make one hell of a Nicole.
Thus, with the kind lady's permission, Nicole Porter has become the first fictional character to have a photograph (rather then a drawing) with her Character Guide entry.I've also asked her if she could send me some other photos, so that maybe I could find one that would suit Kirstin. Hopefully I'll have another for you soon!
29 October 2000: Well, hopefully all of the counters are fixed. If anyone notices a problem, please let me know. As I fixed the counters, I also fixed the occasional bit of HTML here and there... most notably on the Contest Results page and on the original BS½ ADM...
Speaking of which... the new BS½ ADM is now available! Enjoy!
And lastly, due to technical difficulties on the homefront, I may or may not be without a computer for a bit. Hopefully not long, but maybe up to a week.
25 October 2000: Been a while since an update. Terribly sorry. Well, noting new story-wise, I'm sorry to say. There should be a new Boy Scouts ½ Anime Deathmatch soon, though. In fact, I was hoping to have it ready tonight for you...
Then I discvered that Geocities is completely changing their counter management system... and I have to now go and edit the HTML coding for my counters on over 50 pages of my website! Oy!
So I'll be doing that for the next few days... if anyone notices any problems concerning counters please let me know.
26 August 2000: Part 18 is here. Enjoy. I'm tired now, I think I shall go to bed. Good night...
24 May 2000: A brand spanking new instalment in the Kenny's Laboratory series is ready for you all to enjoy! Kenny's Laboratory: Adventures in Time and Space! My, don't I use a lot of exclimation marks in my update notices!
14 May 2000: The latest instalment of the Perspectives series, Perspectives VIII: Fall From Grace, is now available. Enjoy!
11 May 2000: The main page had it's 20000th hit today! Thanks, everybody!
9 May 2000: A new question has been added to Ask the Boy Scouts!
26 April 2000: My God! Another new story! Fifth one this month!Well, hope you all enjoy the new instalment of Kenny's Laboratory!
23 April 2000: Yet another new story! (Hope you're all not getting spoiled!) Mark Abert's Troop 180 Chronicles - A Different Viewpoint
17 April 2000: TWO new stories!
First off, we have the main series side-story Girls' Night Out, Guys' Night In by Jason Bertovich. It's quite interesting, and I hope you all enjoy it. (Even though it is a main series side-story, some familiarity with the Perspectives series would help in your enjoyment of this fine story.)
Second up... and (no offence Jason) this is the one I'm really excited about... Part 17 is here!!!
6 April 2000: New Story! (Again!) Kenny's Laboratory: Perspectives from the Magnificent World is here! Rejoyce!
Also, it came to my atention some time ago (courtesy of a kind woman by the name of Lady Lioness) that my guestbook is working again! Sign away!
12 March 2000: New Story! Perspectives VII: A Hoelscher Carol is now available for your reading enjoyment.
Hmm... 'Course, I still have to write Perspectives VII, update the Character Guide, rewrite this page... And when Nickie-chan finishes Part 17, I'll have to get that ready to go online... Oie, my work is never done!!!
6 February 2000: The John Smith Publishing, Inkorporaited Website (of which the Boy Scouts ½ Wedsite was only one section) is no more. It has been replaced with a slightly remodled, Boy Scouts ½ Only website called, "The Boy Scouts ½ Universe."
The main difference (besides the removal of all non BS½ sections) was the re-organization of the site to give the main Boy Scouts ½ series, the Perspectives series, and Kenny's Laboratory each their own index page.
Some minor changes I still have in store include a re-writing of the Introductions and Notes found higher up on this page, a slightly overdue update to the character guide, and a few other tidbits here and there.
Also, updates from 15 July 1999 through 1 February 2000 have been reloceted to the Updates Archive.
1 February 2000: Perspectives VI is now available, this one by yours truely, who must now hold the record for the quickest two stories in a row have been posted to this site!
The simultanious postings of parts 13, 14, and 15 don't count, as I had written 14 and 15 before Mike finished 13. In this case, I didn't start VI until after Jason-kun had finished V... I was struck with a sudden writing fevor, and had to write it as swiftly as I could.
Hope you all enjoy it!
31 January 2000: Perspectives from the Food Court V is now available, and it is quite good. Enjoy.
23 January 2000: Part 16 is now available in two formats: original and edited for content.
The reason for this is simple. I got an e-mail from a fellow Scout Leader who said that he enjoyed the story, but felt that the greater then normal use of
profanity could reflect negatively on the Boy Scouts in a time when the last thing Scouting needs is more negative criticism.
This fellow Scout Leader is one for whom I have a lot of respect, and I could see his point. In fact, aside from the occasional usage here and there (such as whenever that idiot Kuntz opens his mouth, or Carolyn's classic reaction to discovering Matt/Matty's curse) I do try to avoid profanity.
However, most of the profanity in part 16 is present in the form of quotes from the film "Pulp Fiction." I felt that it would take away from these quotes to alter them, but I also wanted to appease my friend and fellow Scout Leader. This is the reason for two separate versions. To access the edited version, just click on the bit that says "click here" now present in the advisory at the beginning of the story.
One funny side effect of the editing... As I said, most of the profanity was present in the form of "Pulp Fiction" quotes. If I was going to prepare an edited version, I felt I should remove all of the profanity, not just what is present in those quotes. Thus, we now get this quite odd line in the story: "'Shoot!' Normally Mike disliked using such language, but he felt it justifiable under the circumstances."
21 January 2000: Rejoyce! Part 16 is now available for your reading enoyment!
Also, Jason is hoping to have Perspectives V done soon, just to keep you informed.
6 January 2000: Well, everyone who thought the world was going to end was... WRONG!!! Ha ha ha ha ha!
There's a new story up today... the sequel to Kenny's Laboratory! Since I wrote the original, I've just had my head filling with ideas, and decided to make it a full fleged spin-off! Don't worry, though.
I shall next devote my attention to part 16... I couldn't even right my next Kenny's Lab story now if I wanted to... my next is the fourth, first comes the Perspectives / Kenny's Lab crossover which I'm sure Jason won't start until after Perspectives V.
Lastly, I hope you all liked my Y2K joke... tee hee...
13 December 1999: Mike had an idea for a short side-story and he just had to write it! It's a follow-up to his earlier masterwork, My Preoccupation with Squirrels. Now available for your reading enjoyment is, Conversations with a Squirrel: A Day in the Life of Me
Also, there have been some updates to the Character Guide. Two new characters have been added, as well as some new pics... of the photographic kind! Check out the new pics for Jon Becker, Jason Bertovich, Bill Gelinas, John Hoelscher, Fenny Lin (Real Life?), Mike Quadrozzi, and last and certianly least, Pikachu!
16 November 1999: The new side-story, Kenny's Laboratory, is now available! Only thirteen days since the last stories were posted! I think this proves conclusively that any delays are all Mike's fault!
Well, now I can get started on part 16...
Also, any Evangelion fans, please click on that tiny link towards the bottom of the BS½ main page for "The Nitpicker's Guide to Neon Genesis Evangelion Message Board." It's a new message board moderatied by yours truely and on a site owned by the author of the "Nitpicker's Guide" series of books.
10 November 1999: Updated the Character Guide to include characters from parts 13, 14, and 15, Perspectives IV, the new Anime Deathmatch, and Of Possible Futures: The Tale of Neko-chan and Bertovich.
3 November 1999: Well, Mike has unfortunately still not delivered part... oh, wait a sec... he has! Yes, he has! Part 13 is nor available for your enjoyment! And it is the longest Boy Scouts ½ story yet! (The former record was held by Perspectives IV).
And not only do you have Part 13... but also 14, and 15! How much would you expect to pay for not one, but three new Boy Scouts ½ stories? $19.95? $29.95? $49.95, even? Today, on this special television offer, you'll get not one, but all three Boy Scouts ½ stories for the increadably low low price of just $0.00! Still not enough? We'll also throw in Anime Deathmatch Boy Scouts ½ II: The Nightmare Continues!
The three stories are yours to try out, and if you are not satisfied after an in-home ninety day trial period, you can return them for a full refund, and the side story is yours to keep as our free gift!
31 October 1999 Again: Special update! 10:15 p.m. eastern standard time... Mike just called. He finished 13... He's proof reading it and will e-mail it to me tomorrow. Then I have to give it my proof read, convert it to HTML... and... well... expect it within a few days! Woohoo!
31 October 1999: Sorry, sorry, no 13 yet... However, I added a new feature. There is now a message board entitled "Ye Olde Boy Scouts ½ Message Centre." Just click the link under "Resources" on the main page. Remember, this is a forum for discussion, not just a place to say, "Hi, Matt." That's what the guestbook is for.
Also, a new question has been answered in Ask the Boy Scouts! It's a question I had actually received some time ago, so I hope the asker still stops by once in a while...
22 October 1999: Not an update, really, just some important maintenance. Late last night, just before I got off of the computer, I was startled to discover the last half of the Boy Scouts ½ Main Page missing. I thought, "No problem, however. I'll just upload the back-up copy off of my hard drive." Then I hit a major snag: the back-up copy was missing the last half as well! Horror of horrors!!!
Well, I just finished re-creating the latter half of the main page, using my memory and a month old print-out of the main page. The results seem to be identical to what went missing, so everything should be back to normal. I appologize to anyone who visited within the last twenty-four hours for any inconvience this may have caused.
One thing I did tweak a bit as I was reconstructing the main page: The section asking for "questions, comments, suggestions, or constructive criticism"
formerly had e-mail addresses for myself, Mike Quadrozzi, and Aaron Abdowmassy. However, since I originally put that there, the list of contributing authors for Boy Scouts ½ has grown conciderably. As I thought it would look most cluttered to list them all on the main page, I only left myself (as the webmaster) on the main page, and moved all of the others to a new page, the E-Mail Directory, accessable from the main page.
11 October 1999: Well, Mike did have quite a lot more of part 13 done, but it was yet to be completely finished. However, it was clear that he was most
pissed with himself about this, so there was no need to torture him as I felt he would do just fine torturing himself.
However, there is something new today... a major update has been done on the Character Guide. I must caution you, however, that it does contain a few spoilers, especially where part 14 is concerned. So read it at your own risk.
5... No, make that 6 October 1999: I spoke to Mike tonight (actually, as it's past midnight, make that last night) and one whing he mentioned was that he wanted to get part 13 done by Friday.I didn't tell him to have it done by Friday. He said he wanted to get it done by Friday. This is quite different from the usual vagueness he offers when asked when he will be done. He was most adamant that he wanted to get 13 done, and in fact he's already eager to work on his next parts (19 and 20).
What does this mean? Well, assuming he does get it done, unfortunately we'll all be away this weekend (camping trip). I could start work on proofing/editing/converting to HTML on Monday. However, as this story is quite a long one, it may take a few days. In summery, if I get it on Friday, you'll have it no later then next Friday.
Hopefully Mike will come through. He even told me that if he didn't, I was free to make his life a living hell. Keeping in mind that we'll be camping together all weekend, you can rest assured that I'll take him up on it... ^_^
One other brief note: Updates prior to 15 July 1999 have been moved into the Updates Archive.
2 October 1999: I had a dream... I had a dream of a Super-Huge-Mega-Update™. This dream was dependant on one thing: Mike completing part 13.
And so, I selfishly kept four other completed stories away from the eyes of you, the readers, in the hopes of seeing this dream come true.
Unfortunately, Mike has still not completed part 13. Don't worry, he has started it. In fact, he's at least 13 pages into it... and what he's written so far is worth the wait.
At least, it's worth the wait for part 13, but is it also worth the wait for the other stories? Is it right for me to keep them from you? After all, it has been about two and a half months since the last story was added.
I had a dream, but it is time for the dream to end. I can no longer in good conscience keep the completed stories from you. Thus, I have now decided to at long last unveil three of them. (The fourth, part 14, I'm sure you can understand my keeping untill after part 13.)
So, there you have it. Please enjoy Perspectives from the Food Court IV: Table for One, Tea for Four. Also enjoy the Perspectives side story, Of Possible Futures: The Tale of Neko-chan and Bertovich, as well as the regular side story, How to Be a Successful Feline.
15 September 1999: Well... the update ain't here yet. However, Mike has a good chunk of part 13 done and he has a good excuse for having taken a bit of a break. He had to prepare for his Eagle Board of Review...
Both he ans Bill Gelinas went for their Board of Review yesterday, and they both passed! And while there's still a bit of red tape and paperwork to get out of the way before everything's all nice and official, the pracitcal upshot of all this is that they have both earned the rank of Eagle Scout, the highest rank one can earn in Boy Scouting.
I wish to congradulate both Mike and Bill on their acheivement. Anyone else wishing to do the same, please feal free to e-mail either Mike or Bill.
Oh, and any of you who e-mail Mike, please feel free to add something about how much you are looking forward to part 13's compleation... wink, wink... ^_^
29 August 1999: An update... Ah yes, it's been quite a while since there's been one of these... and although this isn't quite an update yet, there is one coming soon... What can you expect? Quite alot! Two new Boy Scouts ½ stories, a new side story, a new Perspectives from the Food Court, and a Perspectives side story!
And although I grow uncertian about wether or not it would be a good idea to hold your breath as you wait, there's still a glimmer of hope that the Otakon pics may see their way onto my site someday...
Oh, one other little thing... We've had over 10,000 hits! That's right, since my last update we've reached the big ten-oh-oh-oh! Thanks to all my visiters, especially those fans who come time and time again.
2 August 1999: I have an admission to make. This isn't an update as much as it is a request for feedback. Jason has been curious as to people's opinions on his Perspectives from the Food Court stories, and I must admit that I'm a bit curious myself. If you haven't already, go read 'em. Once you've read them, e-mail us and tell us what you thought of 'em. Please include something in the subject to make it clear that the e-mail is about Perspectives from the Food Court.
Oh, one other detail. I did do a bit of updating today, but it was only a slight addition to the Phantom Menace review. If you're interested, read it while you can. I may take the review down before too much longer, as this isn't a movie review site.
Lastly, I still haven't gotten the con pics scanned... Soon... I promice... Please don't hurt me...
15 July 1999: Boy Scouts ½ can now claim what is probably a first in the history of fan fiction: With the completion of Perspectives from the Food Court III, and Jason planning a fourth installment, I can no longer see these stories as simply side stories. Thus, Boy Scouts ½ is probably the first time ever that the worlds most gratutious self-insertion fanfic has spawned the world's most gratutious self-insertion spin-off!
Yes, that's right. I have decided to declare the Perspectives from the Food Court series as a spin-off. One or two stories, no problem. Three, that's stretching it, but all right. But when Jason lays down plans for a fourth, there's no way they can just be called side stories. That would be like calling Deep Space Nine a side story of The Next Generation, or Crusade a side story of Babylon 5.
Thus, you will notice on the main page that the Perspectives from the Food Court stories have been removed from the Side Story listing, and have been relisted under the newley created Spin-Offs category.
14 July 1999: Normally, I am very opposed to making any major changes, and even most minor changes, to a story once it is online. Mike can attest to
this with the mionr battles we had had with the error he had made in part 5's title which I refused to change. However, I just noticed a major continuity error in the side story, The Manor House Horror by Jon Becker. This is not Jon't fault, as he began work on the story before the events of parts 9 and 10 could be known to him. Rather, it is my fault for failing to notice the error before posting the story to my site.
Basically, the error is mentioning Scoutmaster Bill Pruyne, when this story takes place after the events of 9 and 10. Fortunately, Mr. Pruyne's character was only a minor one in the story, so it was simple enough to just change the name to Shmuler, the new Scoutmaster.
I appologize for having let this error slip by me for as long as it has.
12 July 1999: Unfortunately the Otakon Pictorial isn't ready yet. I had a good chunk of the photos scanned when I realized I had accidentially been saving them as GIFs, and they looked awful. I will have to rescan them all and save them as JPGs. After all, I demand only the best for the visiters of my site.
Don't dispare, however. I do have something for you all. Part 12 is here! Rejoyce!
6 July 1999: Well, I got back yesterday, but alas I didn't have much time online so couldn't leave a hello for you all. Gomen.
In any case, I'M BACK, AND I HADE A GREAT TIME!!!!!!
Stay tuned to my website... coming soon, my OTAKON PICTORIAL! See Matt in all of his Otaku glory. See him with Jason "Anime Deathmatch" Bertovich, John "The Living Jinnai" Hoelscher, and Travis "The Other Guy Staying in Our Hotel Room Who I Can't Think Up a Snappy Nickname For At the Moment" Evens.
See these four brave souls on their Otakon journey... and beware the evil things that bordom and post-con tiredness cause them to do with plush Genmas and Pikachus...
Matt's Otakon Pictorial -- Coming Soon to This Website!!!!!!
1 July 1999: This is it. Today is the day. Not too long from now, I'll be on my way out the door.
Today, I'll meet a lot of people who until now have just been for me words on the computer screen, or in a few cases voices on the phone. People like Jason Bertovich, the creator of Anime Deathmatch. People like the Bouncy Goddess herself, Fenny Lin.
Today, I will embarke on a journey. I shall begin the greatest experience there can be for an Otaku other then a pilgramage to Japan.
Today, I leave for Otakon.
And when I get back, expect pictures. Oh, yes, there will be pictures!
Ja ne!
30 June 1999: Oh dear, I forgot to mention anything yesterday... In any case, this is it! At 10:30 tomorrow morning, I'll be getting on the plane. In other words... ONLY 1 MORE DAY UNTIL I LEAVE FOR OTAKON!!!!!!!!!!!!
28 June 1999: Hello. Today I have decided not to find some insignificant update to make to my site just for the sake of telling you that there are ONLY 3 MORE DAYS UNTIL I LEAVE FOR OTAKON!! That's right, I shan't be boring you with the fact that there are ONLY 3 MORE DAYS! WOOHOO!!! Thank you, and have a nice day.
27 June 1999: Mike Quadrozzi drew a picture of Kenny at a camping trip last month, and I finely got around to scanning it and uploading it. It is accessable through the Character Guide. This is the first of the Character pics that have been added since I've had a scanner myself, and while I appreciate others doing scans for me in the past, I must say that this scan is of a much better quality. If Mike still has the originals of the earlier pics, I may rescan them eventually.
And, of course, it goes without saying that THERE'S ONLY 4 MORE DAYS TILL MY DEPARTURE FOR OTAKON!!!!!!!!!!
26 June 1999: I was unable to do any updating yesterday, as that baka Geocities / Yahoo! merger was taking place. Therefore, I couldn't tell you all that yesterday THERE WAS ONLY 6 MORE DAYS UNTIL I LEAVE FOR OTAKON, AND ONLY A WEEK UNTIL THE ACTUAL START OF THE CON!!!!!!!!!!
In other news, I did a bit more of that colour control coding today (although not as much as I would have liked) and fixed a peice of code that was wrong on the Personal Pages page.
Oh, yeah. ONLY 5 MORE DAYS UNTIL I LEAVE FOR OTAKON!!!!!!!!
24 June 1999: I'm in the middile of adding a bit of code to my pages for the purpose of colour control. Colour control, you ask? What's this?
Put simply, I'm defining the colours on my page rather then letting my visitors' browsers define them. I first thought of doing this back when I got some enteries for the First Aniversery Contest that complained of the "boring grey background," which struck me as odd since I thought it was white...
I may not get to every single page today, but I intend to do this to all of them in the near future.
As a side note, since I was able to add this code to the Character Guide, which I had previously been unabe to add even one more character to. Thus, it seems that the restriction on file size is gone, and I no longer have to split the Character Guide into two files eventually.
As another side note... ONE MORE WEEK TILL I LEAVE FOR OTAKON!!!!!!! (Bet you didn't see that coming!)
23 June 1999: Updated the Legal Mumbo-Jumbo page to include the latest site additions... I could have done this yesterday, but decided to put it off 'till today.
Why? Simple, really. It gave me an excuse to mention that THERE'S ONLY 8 MORE DAYS UNTIL I LEAVE FOR OTAKON!!!!!!!
22 June 1999: Another new entry into the Ask the Boy Scouts! section. That section seems to have been picking up a bit lately, huh? This letter is answered by Mike, and it's quite funny. I suggest you all go read it, especially if you like the pythonesque.
Some site news: Seems that there's some big merger going on between Geocities and Yahoo!. (Never cared much for Yahoo!, hope they don't go mucking things up...) In any case, while this probably won't effect my site at all (at least, I hope not), you never know what funny bugs and whozits may come out of nowhere when They are working out the technical bits of the merger. If my page or any other Geocities page seems to go screwy and disapear for a bit, I wouldn't worry too much. Just check back a bit later. (In a worst case senerio, I have all of the Boy Scouts ½ pages backed up on my hard drive, so I could easily put them back online if the unthinkable were to take place.)
And lastly, you should have known this was coming... ONLY 9 MORE DAYS UNTIL I LEAVE FOR OTAKON!!!!!!!
21 June 1999: Made minor revisions to the Timeline. Basically, it now includes the Side Stories, which I felt would be important since some of the side stories are now ones that would be considered canonical.
And, in other news, ONLY 10 MORE DAYS TILL I LEAVE FOR OTAKON!!!!!!!
20 June 1999: New stuff in Ask the Boy Scouts!
Also, ONLY 11 MORE DAYS TILL I LEAVE FOR OTAKON!!!!!!!
17 June 1999: New story up. Alas, it's not yet part 12. Jon "WHAT!?!?" Becker wrote a side story called The Manor House Horror that takes place on Halloween, placing this story between parts 12 and 13.
Also, I moved updates from January through March of this year into the Updates Archive.
7 June 1999: Okay, this in't a site update, per se, just a "Behind the Scenes at BS½" update.
First off, I want to get part 12 done soon, the catch is I've run in to a wee bought of writers block. I know what I want to say in the story, I just can't quite get out how I want to say it. I think in part it may be because this is a busy month for me, so I will probably just let the matter drop 'till July. Sorry for the delay.
One of the things that has me so busy this month is my Otakon preperations. Ah, Otakon! The next best thing for an American Otaku to taking a pilgramage to Japan, itself! One of the thing's I've been doing is printing, folding, and stapeling 50 individually numbered copies of parts 1 - 5, each personally autographed by myself and Mike Quadrozzi. I will be giving these out at Otakon, absoloutly free! So if anyone of you are going, try and pick one up if you can. Only 50 of the special Otakon Commemerative books will be printed, and they will only be available to people who go to Otakon. (Not even Mike gets one, even after I made him sign all of the bloody things...)
Speaking of Otakon, after I get back, look for a post-con report of my experiences!
And lastly, some shameless promotion for my pal, BoneparteOzaki. His site's recently had it's first anniversery, and to celebrate, he put up a special First Anniversery Anime Deathmatch! That's right! And I even have two cameo apearences in it! Woohoo! (Find one of the plethora of links to his site elsewhere on mine.)
Well, see you all soon, and hopefully, my next update will include part 12. Hopefully.
1 June 1999: Well, Mike announced the title for part 13 today, which means that I have only ten years to write part 12 before he finishes part 13. ^_^ In all seriousness, I hope to get cracking on 12 soon, and then I will focus all of my energies on pestering Mike for part 13.
Saw a certian flick again last Friday, and thus made some aditional comments in my review thingy.
And only a month till Otakon! Woohoo!
24 May 1999: Well, I did go see that flick, and the review is accessable from the Boy Scouts ½ main page. If anyone violently disagrees with my review, then piss off!
19 May 1999: Jason "BoneparteOzaki" Bertovich was so moved by his little cameo in part 11 that he felt the need to write a side story to go along with it. It is called Perspectives from the Food Court. Before I even had the chance to get it online, he was further moved to write a second one. This one is Perspectives from the Food Court II: The Least You Could Do. Well, they're both online now, so enjoy.
Hopefully I'll get some work done on 12 soon.
I've gotten some more mail for "Ask the Boy Scouts," but aparently these latest few came from some people who missed the point that they're supposed to be asking the characters, and not the minds behind them. In any event, I may eventually create a Boy Scouts ½ FAQ to adress these.
Oh, and some movie, "Phantom" something or other came out today. I hear it's supposed to be good. I'm seeing it Sunday, I'll let you know.
4 May 1999: Updated the Character Guide, adding information to certain characters reflecting new develpoments in the latest stories, and also adding an entry for Matthew Swett.
However, I shall soon have to do a major revamp of the Character Guide, as the HTML file has become as full as one can make it on Geocities. (One of the few disadvantages to Geocities, but I can live with it. Hey, it's free!!) I wasn't even able to put all I wanted into Swett's Character Guide entry, cause it simply wouldn't let me put in another letter. I'll probably end up splitting the Character Guide into two seperate HTML files, one containing enteries for A-M, and the other N-Z. Hopefully I can do this soon, as not only do I want to get Swett's full entry up, but there's other characters to add, too.
2 May 1999: Used my meager graphic design skill to create a couple of banners for Boy Scouts ½. If you want to see them, just click on the link under
"Resources" that says, "Want to link to Boy Scouts ½ on your page?"
25 April 1999: Shock! Part 11 is completed less then a week after part 10! Yes, you heard right! In a wonderful bit of good timing, I was able to get together with Carolyn, yesterday, and she was able to give me the necessary pointers needed in the completion of part 11.
Hopefully, part 12 won't be long in the making, either. And don't worry about the fact that a get-together to play Magic is mentioned in part 11, and in fact the title of part 12 even mentions "Magic." There will be no lengthy scenes detailing a Magic game down to the last bloody moove!
20 April 1999: Bet you didn't expect any news of this type so soon after part 9 was finished, but...
Part 10 is now available for your reading enjoyment! Hooray!
And part 11 is in fact already part written. I just have to get together with my dear friend Carolyn before I write any more, as I personally don't know much about... shopping... for certian types of... apparel...
9 April 1999: The results of the contest are up! Hooray! If you missed the chance to enter the contest, or if you lost the contest and want another shot to appear in something, or even if you won the contest and want to monopolize contest winning, then there's good news for you. BoneparteOzaki has an oddily similar contest on his page (hmm... wonder where he got the idea...) where you can enter to win an appearence in Anime Deathmatch!
Also, I got two questions for Ask the Boy Scouts quite a while ago, actually, abd I finely got off my arse and posted them, along with their answers. Go check 'em out, and send in more questions!
Lastly, today, I did that archiving of earlier site updates that I mentioned in my last update. (I've had a bloody busy day updating this bugger, 'aven't I?)
6 April 1999: To clear up much of the clutter on the Boy Scouts ½ main page (and hopefully speed up load time) I have relocated many of the links to other sites that were previously on the Main Page to three seperate pages that are accessable from the Main Page. These pages are, "Link Pages & Search Engines," "Personal Pages," and "Webrings."
As this page is similarly getting cluttered (with all of these bloody updates) I'll probably soon embark on a clean up here, too, archiving earlier site updates to another page.
I should be seeing Mike tomorrow night, and if he dosen't give me the contest results, I'll rip his toenails off and mail one each to the first 10 people who
write me asking for one. (Um, if you don't realize that that was a joke, seek help...)
30 March 1999: Part 9 is finely here! Hooray! The contest results should be up shortly, and the delay is again Mike's fault. (It's fun to blame someone else, especially when it's true!) I hope to start work on part 10 soon, and as I'm writing this one, you can all blame me for any delays.
12 March 1999: Guess what? THE BOY SCOUTS ½ MAIN PAGE HAD ITS 5000TH HIT TODAY! WOOHOO!!!! Thanks to all of you who have visited my site.
And, no, still no part 9. Mike tells me soon. Soon...
7 March 1999: Mike e-mailed me tonight, and in that e-mail was a character guide entry for Mr. John Hawley, which has been added to the Character Guide. He told me that he has been working on part 9, and wrote the guide entry during a brief bit of writers block. He told me that he might have part nine as early as tonight. (I'm writing this at 1:00 a.m., so tonight is a bit off still.) If he does have it, hopefully I'll have it on the site in a couple of days or so.
Also, I did some slight tinkering on the main page just now and mid-day yesterday.
Only eight days 'till I stop accepting entries for the contest, wether I have 25 of them or not. I now only have 6, so there's still plenty of opertunity! Enter today!
3 March 1999: Justy Yung is in the house! RUN! Just kidding, but his character guide entry now exists online!
In purely selfish news, I have become a member of an organization plotting world devistation. Well, I don't think we're plotting world organization really, but you never know. Actually, I haven't personally met any of the organization's members, although I have kept a lengthy correspondance with the organization's president. And I'll get the chance to meet the other members at Otakon 1999. That's right, Otakon! Woohoo! If any of you fine folk are also attending, maybe I'll see you there. I'm the funny looking guy in a trench coat and fedora no matter what the wether.
2 March 1999: Just to keep you all informed, Mike showed me three and a bit pages of part 9 today, and assured me that the rest of it was bubbling in his head. Good stuff, it was. Also, he wrote the Character Guide entery for Justy Yung. I don't have the time now, alas, but I'll try to add it in a few days. (With luck, maybe I'll have something else to add, too...)
12 February 1999:The person mentioned in the last update as asking if he could include Boy Scouts ½ in his page's fanfic archive was kind enough to e-mail me. His name's Erik Jessup, and a link to his Ranma page is now on the main page.
In other news, although he assures me he's writing it, and I'm sure he is, I still have no part 9 to share with you all, due to Mike's writing style of sitting at his computer staring at a screen for hours on end waiting for an idea to come to him. It's a writing style that works, as seen by the excellent parts 5 and 8, but it unfortunately quite slow. So, please be patient. And if, like me, you cannot be patient, Mike's e-mail address is on the main page, so let him
know how impatient you all are. ^_^
8 February 1999: Got asked to join a webring, so now Boy Scouts ½ is part of Sean Chao's Ranma 1/2 Dojo Webring. As with any webring, even though the code is on my site, it may be a day or two before the links on it function properly.
Also, someone asked me if he could put Boy Scouts ½ in his page's fanfic archive. I said yes, and sure enough he did. I'd like to tell you who it is, and give you his URL, but for the life of me I can't remember. If he should happen to read this, I'd apreciate if he droped me an e-mail to jog my memory.
Lastly, still no part 9. Last night, durring our weekly post-X-files phone chat, Mike assured me that he had about three pages done, and I'm hoping he'll
have it finished by Wednesday... I hope...
5 February 1999: Well, lots of little updates. Most of them minor.
Made modifications to the Legal Mumbo-Jumbo page. Added a copyright notice to each story itself. Made minor modifications to the legal notice on the bottom of the main page. Changed the writing credit of part 7 to better reflect the part Aaron played in the writing of that story. Sorry for the snub, Aaron.
Now, the not so minor changes: Updated this page with another addition to the History of the Series. Also, I added Mike and Aaron's e-mail addresses to the main page. (Now all of you who are desperately waiting for part 9 can personally pester Mike instead of having me do it for you... Not that I'll stop pestering him, anyways...)
One last thing: The enteries for the Anniversery Contest aren't pouring in quite as fast as I'd hoped. If you want to enter, but are waiting for some reason, hurry up! I've decided to cut the contest off on 15 March even if I haven't received 25 enteries. Beware the Ides of March!
23 January 1999: Finished an update I was working on on the Guestbook. To decrease loading time for the guestbook, any guestbook enteries from 1998 are now located on a seperate page accessable from the man guestbook page.
I finely received a question for Ask the Boy Scouts!. Once I get a couple more, I'll post the first few on the Ask the Boy Scouts! page.
And finely, tommorrow I'll phone Mike and see how Part 9 is coming. (I'd call him right now, but the Troop's on a camping trip. I wish I could have gone... sob... sob... I had to work... sob... sob...)
19 January 1999: Well, Mike has titled part 9. He hasn't written it yet, but he assures me that it will be done by the end of next week! I threatened him, saying that if he fails me, I will put his phone number on my website, so all the angry visitors can call him and yell at him. Alas, it is most likely an empty threat, but you never know...
Also, I did a slight addition to this here page itself, adding some to the history of the series.
15 January 1999:Minor modifications were made to the Timeline to reflect the most recent plans for upcoming stories. What's ahead? Well, the Scouts of 192 will investigate exacty what happened with the SPL elections. Then, Matt will go out with Sarah! (But it's not what you may think...) After that, there will be a Boy Scouts ½ Christmas Special! And, when Boy Scouts ½ moves into 1998 (only a little more then a year behind real life...), a new boy
named Perry will join Troop 192... and he seems to want to kill Matty Hayes.
In other news, I've only had three enteries so far in the First Anniversery Contest, so get those fingers flying across your keyboards and e-mail me an entery today!
In other other news, there have been no submissions to the Ask the Boy Scouts! feature! Come on, people!
5 January 1999: Hope everyone had a save and happy New Year's Eve...
It's a few days early, but the Boy Scouts ½ Website First Anniversery Celebration kicked off today. To celebrate, new Anniversery graphics have replaced some of the standard fare, and there are two other additions to the site. The first is the hotly anticipaited Fisrt Anniversery Contest! And the second is Ask the Boy Scouts!, an idea I had earlier today that I thought might be fun. Enjoy!
30 December 1998: Fixed a single peice of source code. Now, that may not seem like much, and normally I wouldn't mention it, but this error in the code did unfortunately cause the last 1/4th or so of part 8 to show up in italics, which must have caused headaches for anyone trying to print up a nice copy of it. Sorry 'bout that.
This will probably be the last update of the year, so Happy New Year, and I'll see you in January with the First Aniversy celebration! Ja ne!
28 December 1998: Added pic of Dan Wellington to the Character Guide. (Also uploaded a pic of Justy Yung, but he dosen't have a Character Guide entery yet, so click here until he does.) Pics courtesy of Mike Quadrozzi.
Revised Anime Deathmatch to include pics of Dan, Justy, and a group pic of the "Jusenkyo Scouts," as well as the Sailor Scout pic.
27 December 1998: Updated the Character Guide to include pics of Aaron, Matt, Bill Gelinas, Bill Hughes, Kuntz, and Mike. Illustrations courtesy of Mike Quadrozzi.
24 December 1998: Part 8 is added. That's right, the long awaited, full version of part 8. Enjoy.
Oh, and Happy Hollidays!
23 December 1998:Well, not really an update... more of an anouncement. In less then a month, on 8 January 1999, the Boy Scouts ½ website will be a year old! To celebrate, amongst other things, there will be a contest where you, the visitor to the Boy Scouts ½ website, can win an apearence in an upcoming Boy Scouts ½ story! Woohoo!
Also, I have chosen as the official spokesmodel of the Boy Scouts ½ website's first aniversery none other then that lovely green haired lady to the left, Urusei Yatsura's Lum. What, you may ask, does Lum have to do with Boy Scouts ½? Good question. The answer: absoloutly nothing. But hey, it's my website, and Lum is one of the most (if not the most) kawaii Anime babes there is.There. That's the reason. It's may not be a good one, but... Wait. It is a good one. I mean, after all, it's Lum. Lum! Who doesn't love Lum? Well, keep your eyes pealed for all of the semi-exciting first aniversery stuff coming in January. Oh, and for those who like substance rather then fluff, you can expect a few more stories very soon, too. Hooray! |
12 December 1998: Added Mike Qudarozzi's My Preoccupation with Squirrels to the Side Stories.
9 December 1998: Mike finely writes something! A special sneek preview (the first few scenes) of part 8 is made available.
8 December 1998: Gave people's ears reason to stop being jellous that there was so much for people's eyes to do while visiting the Boy Scouts ½ website. (Added music to the Boy Scouts ½ main page, the "What is Anime Deathmatch?" page, the Introduction and Notes page, the Character Guide, and the Timeline.)
6 December 1998: Slight tweaking of the Character Guide. Really not much. Probably not worth the effort of mentioning here. Sorry to have bothered you.
5 December 1998: Localized all of the graphics on the Boy Scouts ½ pages. (Note: This does not include the links page or the guestbook.) In the future, any graphics added to any Boy Scouts ½ page will be local.
30 November 1998: Thousands of people have e-mailed me... well, maybe not thousands... okay, about five. I'll start again.
Five or so people have e-mailed me asking when part 8 will be done.
Just in case any others are wondering, here's the answer: It'll be done when Mike writes it. If I was writing it, I could give you a more definite answer, but I'm not, so I can't. Rest assured, however, that I am at least as eager as all of you to read it, and I pester Mike about it to varying degrees each time I speak to him. And as soon as he writes it, I'll put it online for all of you to enjoy.
Now, I apreciate e-mail about my series, and a gleeful little smile falls across my face each time I see mail with "Boy Scouts ½" in the subject header, but please refrain from asking when the next one will be finished, as you can see I am just as eager to know as all of you. ^_^
26 November 1998: Slight tweaking to Anime Deathmatch, mainly the adition of pics for Shayla-Shayla and Kuno. Oh, and Happy Thanksgiving, everyone!
22 November 1998: Anime Deathmatch Pay-Per-View: Boy Scouts ½ is made an official part of the Anime Deathmatch series on BoneparteOzaki's website. Retitled as Killing Spree Jamboree '98, the story features some slight alterations by BoneparteOzaki, so that it might "keep with the curent (Anime Deathmatch) Timeline."
15 November 1998: Majorly revised the Introduction and Notes page. Added "Recent Updates" link to Boy Scouts ½ Main Page. Added Anime Deathmatch Pay-Per-View: Boy Souts ½! Added "Sub-Stories" category to the Main Page.
13 November 1998: Added "Legal Mumbo-Jumbo" page.
11 November 1998: Joined the Anime Fan Fiction webring. Added a link to the Obligatory Links Page from the Boy Scouts ½ main page. Added a link reading, "DANGER! DO NOT CLICK!" to the Boy Scouts ½ main page.
Early November 1998: Reorganized Boy Scouts ½ main page by separating it into two categories of Stories and Resources.
17 October 1998: Added part 7.
15 October 1998: Added a counter to parts 1 - 6, Intro and Notes page, Character Guide, and Timeline. All future stories will have counters as soon as being added.
12 October 1998: Added a counter to the Boy Scouts ½ Main Page.
Immediately Prior to 12 Oct. 1998: Boy Scouts ½ gets listed on the Anipike.
9 December 1998: Mike finely writes something! A special sneek preview (the first few scenes) of part 8 is made available.

Well, that's everything. Obviously, because it is mentioned in the 23 December 1998 entry, we know that the website was founded on 8 January 1988, but it seems that updates between then and 12 October 1988 were not recorded.
As before, authentic historical spelling and grammar are maintained, and any links present were either confirmed to still work, replaced with links to Wayback Machine archived versions, or as a last resort replaced with unlinked blue text to simulate a link. (One of the simulated links is to a Quadrozzi illustrated drawing of Justy Yung. If you would like to see it, it is the same one used in the first Anime Deathmatch story.)
Wow, what a nostalgic thing this is for me, and a virtual history lesson of what the internet was once like. Webrings, overly complicated front pages with links to every little thing out there, midi music that would annoyingly play non-stop on some pages... Remember when people did such things? Yeah, I was guilty of it, myself.
And some of the features that used to be on the website that I'm not currently planning to restore... A character guide would be nice. Maybe, what with Boy Scouts ½ now having a presence on TV Tropes, someday it will have a character page built there. (And as TV Tropes is open to anyone to edit, feel free to take the initiative, dear readers!)
Perhaps one of the most nostalgic things is looking back on the times when I actually, with a very rudimentary knowledge of HTML, wrote all of the code for the website myself. On one hand, I had a lot more control over how things looked back then. On the other hand, my skills were far from the best, so my "control" had a limited number of things it could do, most of which I can do here on Weebly in addition to some pretty nice things I couldn't previously do on the old sites. So while on the surface, a drag-and-click website editor like Weebly might seem like "Web Building for Dummies," it has given me a pretty nice looking website, with a lot less effort and use of arcane knowledge, and I am quite happy with it.
Still, it was interesting taking this strange trip down memory lane, and anyone who managed to slog all of the way through, thank you for taking it with me. Hopefully it provided some insight into this, at the time of this writing, sixteen (sixteen!) year long and still ongoing oddessy that has been the production of Boy Scouts ½.
Anyway, if there is anything in this long list of old updates that any reader has questions about, do feel free to e-mail me, or better still post a question about it on the Boy Scouts ½ forum. Hopefully I shall be able to pull an answer from the dark recesses of my memory.
